Spill conditions: An estimated 828,000 gallons (19,700 bbl, 2,800 tons) of home heating oil was lost after the towing tug Scandia caught fire, afterwhich the tug and barge North Cape grounded on the south shore of Rhode Island, USA, on 19 January 1996. Government scientists estimate that over 9 million lobsters, 19 million clams, 4.2 million fish as well as other biomass were killed by the intermixture of the diesel into the water column.
