Spill Assessment, Monitoring and Cleanup Oversight
Including analysis of oil spill movement on water and distribution on the shoreline, using satellite and high-altitude imagery, low-altitude helicopter or fixed wing overflights, and extensive ground surveys, including SCAT (Shoreline Cleanup Assessment Technique).
Emergency Response Management
We have direct experience with the Incident Command System (ICS) as Planning Section Chief, Environmental Unit Leader, and On-Water Operations Task Leader;. and have provided numerous ICS training sessions for government and industry.
Spill Risk Assessment
Including the statistical likelihood of occurrence tied with probable environmental and social impacts, to provide an integrated environmental risk assessment. Performed for spilled oil, leaking gas, and for slurry pipelines.
Sensitivity Mapping
Dr. Gundlach is one of the primary developers of the Environmental Sensitivity Index (ESI) mapping protocols, and has applied if to over 10,000 km of shoreline in the United States and internationally. Modern ESI mapping utilizes detailed high-resolution video surveys with shoreline and wildlife data integrated into a GIS (Geographic Information System) for easy information retrieval and updating:
Response Planning
We have reviewed and developed numerous contingency plans for such organizations as the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Environment Canada, Minerals Management Service in Alaska, the International Maritime Organization, United Nations Environment Program, and the U.S. Coast Guard; as well as for U.S. and international oil companies, such as Shell, Chevron, ARCO, YPF (Argentina), PDVSA (Venezuela), NNPC (Nigeria) and many others.
Response
We have provided technical advisory to many of the largest oil spills internationally, such as Amoco Cadiz (France), Metula (Chile), Haven (Italy), Urquiola (Spain), Gulf War spills (Arabian Gulf), and in the United States, including Exxon Valdez (Alaska), World Prodigy and North Cape (Rhode Island), Julie N. (Maine), and Ixtoc I and Alvenus (Texas).
Equipment Selection and Recommendations
We have numerous examples of direct hands-on responsibility for equipment selection, for conducting in-field equipment evaluations, and for selecting strategic equipment depot locations. Clients have included the International Maritime Organization, United Nations Development Program, U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. NOAA, the Panama Canal Commission, Petro-Terminales de Panama (terminals and pipeline), the State of Alaska, and numerous corporate entities.
Training
We provide training programs in spill response management and the Incident Command System (ICS). Participants from more that 25 countries have participated in these sessions.
Environmental Assessment and Audits
Including preparation of Environmental and Social Impact Analyses (ESIA); environmental audits to international standards, best management practices, and best available technologies; development of Environmental Management Plans (EMP) and Key Performance Indices.
ISO 14001 and Work with International Finance Agencies (IFCs)
We provide environmental management plans meeting international standards, and worked with IFC representatives to ensure their requirements are met.
